A Note from Author David Weber
There's been some confusion-not to say, um, energetic debate, readers and fans being readers and fans-about the correct pronunciation of "Manticoran." The truth, alas, is that a stitch was dropped. An error occurred. A mistake was made... and it wasn't Audible's fault. It was mine. Before Audible recorded the very first Honor Harrington book, narrator Allyson Johnson and I not only corresponded by e-mail but actually spoke to one another by phone. She wanted to make absolutely certain she had the correct pronunciations for names, places, star nations, etc., and I tried to make certain all of her questions were answered. And so they were. Unfortunately, at some point in the process, I replied to one of her e-mails by telling her that "Man-ti-core-ahn" was pronounced "Man-tik-er-ahn." Exactly how this happened is more than I can say at this point, except to blushingly disclose that the original e-mail remains intact, confirming to all the world that it was, indeed, my fault. I can ascribe it only to a temporary mental hiccup on my part and crave your forgiveness. If, however, you must blame someone for the mix-up, that someone should be me and not Audible, who have done everything they could to get it right.

I am a huge fan of David Weber's Honor Harrington series and this book is, as always, painting a very thorough picture of his "Honorverse!" My only complaint is that it is too thorough a picture. I really don't want to be in on every conversation the "Peeps" have, nor am I terribly interested in the strife and political maneuvering behind the scenes, both in Haven and in Manticore. One has to admire David Weber for being able to create such a detailed picture of his worlds because it makes them very believable, especially since there are such close parallels in our own history. The drawback, for me, is that I don't get enough of Honor. This seems to be getting worse as each volume in this fascinating series keeps expanding. I don't like Dame Lady Harrington to be relegated to almost a footnote. History buffs will probably love these developments but I miss Honor the warrior, therefore 4 stars for being very well written and for all the scenes that detail Honor's role in her breathtaking break-out from Hades, Also four stars rather than five because Weber forced me to buy the next book in the series just to see her return with all the escaped prisoners to home and her loved ones. I wasn't going to because (see ever expanding books with less and less room for Honor) I was determined to make this the last book in this series since Admiral Harrington in a mostly administrative role is not as attractive as the Honor of Obelisk.Product details

The first to books were good. After that the author has done everything he can to inject his fox news informed beliefs into the books. He even has a news agency called the Fax News Service that is the only one that provides true news, Lol.
I read a LOT. The honor Harrington series is for me the Lord of the rings of space opera. I am rereading and buying the books electronically after losing them in a flood. They are as amazing this time through as the first 4 times.
I've greatly enjoyed the entire series. Some of the adult situations may make readers uncomfortable and it is definitely not a pre-teen sort of book. What you do have is a fast, fun, rapidly moving book that ends all too soon and makes you waiting 'patiently' for the next. A fun read in between other books with more gravitas.
Weber writes beautifully and engaging tales. He somehow manages to find more ways to top himself. This brought both laughter and tears at various points. The characters come alive and are real people. You can't help but cheer their victories and morn their losses.
Divided into six parts (and not all about Honor), Mr. Weber's eighth Honor Harrington book describes what's been going on in the Peeps-Manticore war while Honor's trying to get the prisoner's off the Peep prison planet, aptly named Hell. There's new weaponry, new scheming among the Peeps' command, and new acts of heroism and good spacemanship on both sides. It's the last quarter of the book, however, that provides the major excitement, as Honor gathers her forces and gets her people back to Manticore space.
Honor's story here (the concern of three of the six parts) is constructed similar to one of those strategy games where the party starts off with minimum resources (in this case a shuttle), and acquires more weapons, people, and tech along the way. But it's better than a game--it's got Mr. Weber's endlessly clever mind behind it. He shifts viewpoints; he sets up the battles; and then he brings them to a conclusion that stands up under the rules he's created.
As always, a great read--and with enough loose ends to get you anxious for "Ashes of Victory," number nine in the saga.
This is a good series and this volume certainly has an exciting core, i.e. a massive prison break by 600,000 prisoners from a prison planet. However, there is too much superfluous dialogue and several side-plots which detract from the action. Among other problems, the author seems to be writing several stories at the same time
1. The story of Honor Harrington
2. A strategic and operational history of an inter-stellar war, and
3. A political history of a couple of planets.
The three do have a bearing on the Harrington story, but those aspects could have been handled more crisply and much shortly. The dialogues in all story lines are much too simplistic and give the impression of having been written by an undergraduate (which the author is not). This series needs a good editor to reduce the superfluous dialogue and create another edition of this series, perhaps half as long, but closer to the C.S, Forester style.
I am one of those readers who likes to learn the character and the environment they operate in gradually, like in real life. As some reviewers state, David Weber goes into details ad nauseum and I agree! But that is how some people like to read also. I am going through the series again for probably the third time and, as usual, by this book I'm getting ad nauseum about all the ad nauseum details. So - I still enjoy the main theme and characters by going through series of pages by simply reading the topic and summary sentences of each paragraph until we get back to a "story". But it does get tiring if you like you stories to move along and develop the characters as you go. I'll probably stop with "Ashes of Victory" as I remember it didn't totally devolve into how many lumps of sugar in the tea and the mental ruminations of everyone on the flag deck including the cockroach in the corner.
